Background

Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi had in his recent ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme urged the people of India to hold sanitation campaign from September 15 to October 2, 2018 the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Hon’ble Prime Minister, during his first address to the Nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on 68th Independence Day, urged the people to keep their surroundings clean and green. Mahatma Gandhi Ji had cleanliness and sanitation closest to his heart and for him Cleanliness is next to Godliness. It will be a great tribute to Bapu on his 150th Birth Anniversary by accelerating the Youth led movement for Freedom From Filthiness across India.

Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India, called upon NYKS to observe the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign from 15th September, 2018 to 2nd October, 2018 in a befitting manner.

In view of the above, NYKS is organizing nation-wide Swachhta Hi Sewa’ Campaign through district Nehru Yuva Kendras by involving National Youth Volunteers, affiliated Youth Clubs, local youth and other key stakeholders in the districts. They are being involved and motivate to devote some hours out of their daily works towards cleanliness of their surroundings.

NYKS is encouraging citizens to participate in ‘Swachhta hi Sewa’ campaign up to October 2 as a tribute to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.” Field functionaries of Nehru Yuva Kenra Sangathan (NYKS) are taking part in the ‘Swachhta hi Sewa’ campaign and underscoring the Centre’s commitment towards a “clean, healthy and strong” India.

As directed by the Ministry, following activities are being conducted across the country. All activities are organized through voluntary effort of NYKS Youth Clubs, local youth from different walks of life and National Youth Volunteers. Nonetheless, more and more villagers were motivated to participate to make Swacchta a peoples’ movement.

Action taken during the period w.e.f 15th September 2018 onwards

A) Jagrukta Abhiyan along with Swachhta Hi Sewa’ Campaign Activities were conducted in all States and UTs of India during which

18,671 Banners to highlight the core issues of cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene were displayed
7825 Meetings with eminent citizens were organized for active support and guidance for effective implementation of Swachhta hi Sewa campaign in which 59, 259 persons from all walks of life took part.
989 Rallies and Nataks were conducted to educate people on the importance of cleanliness with a participation of 8953 youth.
4379 Lectures, Seminars, discussions by resource persons and Swachhta Shapaths conducted in which 1,59,823 youth participated.
22, 843 Youth Clubs carried out cleanliness drives in their villages involving villagers from all sections of the society.
Created Awareness and motivated youth & villagers in 28, 843 villages across India on ODF and Swachhta as well as Distribution of IEC material were undertaken.
As part of the campaign Hand Washing was promoted among villagers
7,697 Programs were conducted to clean Schools, Anganwadis, Public Statues, Market Places and Historical Places
Focused Cleanliness drives in State and District offices of NYKS and their surroundings

B) Programs slated for the period till 2nd October 2018 are broadly the same as mentioned above

C) Programs on 2nd October 2018 (Gandhi Jayanti) for culmination of Swachhta Hi Sewa Campaign

a) All the District NYKs observed Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, 2018 with full zeal and gaiety.

b) Gandhi’s message that Swachhta is next to God was disseminated.

c) Following types of activities were undertaken:

Painting, Essay and Quiz Competitions
Wall Paintings in public places
Cultural programmes highlighting Open Defecation and Swachhata issues
Nukad Nataks / Street Plays
